When I was a kid, my mom used to surprise our family once in a while with a special supper: Breakfast. That is, we’d have breakfast food at dinnertime – pancakes, waffles, bacon … stuff like that. I remember I used to think it was very cool to eat pancakes for dinner and that my mom was the most creative mom in the world! Well, now I realize it was probably more a matter of my mom not being able to get to the grocery store and so we’d eat whatever was available, even pancakes for supper.

Well, I still like to have pancakes at odd hours. And so even though it’s not open for dinner, I like to visit The Original Pancake House now and then for a pancake lunch. Of course, they also serve pancakes, eggs, crepes, waffles and such for breakfast. The Original Pancake House is on 21st South at about 800 East. Although the original Original Pancake House was opened in Portland, Oregon in 1953. But now there are lots of Original Pancake Houses around the country, including the one here in Sugarhouse.

One of my favorite pleasures is to sit out on the patio at the Original Pancake House and order the Dutch Baby. I’m not sure why it’s called a Dutch Baby, but it’s a big, oven-baked German style pancake with crusty high ridges that sort of looks like a moon crater. It’s served with traditional whipped butter, powdered sugar, and lemon wedges. Or, you can get it filled up with fresh bananas and strawberries, in which case it’s called a Dutch Treat. Anyway, for me the Dutch Baby is the perfect lunch, baby.

OK, so I sometimes also eat breakfast at the Original Pancake House. In which case I’ll usually order one of their 20 or so different types of pancake. But seriously, could you resist a macadamia nut and white chocolate chip pancake? If not, then head to the Original Pancake House over in the original Sugarhouse.
